Here's some statistics for any family who knows someone who has been or is suicidal at some point in their lives
Suicide rates in the United States have increased over the past five years. After a decline from 2018 to 2020, the age-adjusted suicide rate began rising again, returning to its previous peak by 2022 and remaining at that high level through 2023123.
-
In 2018, the age-adjusted suicide rate was 14.2 deaths per 100,000.
-
The rate declined to 13.5 in 2020.
-
It then increased to 14.1 in 2021 and 14.2 in 2022, matching the highest levels seen since 1941123.
-
Preliminary data for 2023 shows the rate remained at 14.2 per 100,000, with just over 49,300 deaths—effectively unchanged from 2022 and still at a historic high453.
-
Provisional estimates for 2024 suggest a possible further increase to about 14.7 per 100,000, though final data is pending4.
Key details:
-
The suicide rate is now about 30–37% higher than it was in 200042.
-
The increase since 2020 has been especially notable among adults aged 25 and older, while rates among younger males (ages 10–24) have declined12.
-
Males account for nearly 80% of suicides, with a much higher rate than females456.
-
Firearms remain the most common method, involved in over half of all suicides142.
In summary, suicide rates in the US have gone up in the last five years, reaching and maintaining record highs since the COVID-19 pandemic, with 2022 and 2023 seeing the highest rates in decades1423.
These statistics are important because of the level of apathy of some people receive by their support networks like family and friends. So If you know someone who is or has been suicidal know this, IT IS NOT A CRY FOR ATTENTION, it's a CRY FOR HELP. So many don't understand because they are perfectly fine in their filter bubble not caring whether even family members, are considering ending their lives. I've been there before and I understand very well what a family's lack of support will do to so many aspects of their lives, making it impossible for them to succeed. If just ignored, the person is most likely to give up themselves and the family that ignored them should absolutely be held responsible because these days if you can't count on your family for simple emotional support during a hard time in your life then who would you turn to if you were a single person, who only had toxic friends that used you, and everywhere you turned you couldn't find any meaningful support? This is why this statistic is very important to consider so if you have a family member who needs your "emotional" support thru a tough time, do not ignore them, listen to them, help them solve their problem(s) or you just might be the problem if your the family ignoring one of your own to the point they feel the need to take their own life.
